DCM Instructional Systems - Digital Training Platform

DCM Instructional Systems - Digital Training Platform

Our project team was responsible for the comprehensive development of an e-learning and digital training delivery platform. We collaborated with the client on product concept, requirements, design, and architecture to define the system. The Quoin project team then implemented this approach to deliver a robust and extensible platform. Key features of the platform included support for student administration, assessments, and progress monitoring.

DCM Instructional Systems provides training in medical and dental terminology based on a highly-effective learning system that improves retention for students. DCM had relied on traditional classroom-based training focused on a series of video lessons and courses. Quoin was engaged to design and implement a robust platform for digital training delivery and student management. Key requirements included protection of DCM intellectual property, support for institutions and individual students, and a cost-effective infrastructure. Our team recommended the core technology and integration with a third-party digital content delivery network, BrightCove. Quoin was able to build and launch the new platform in close collaboration with our client. The Quoin team was also responsible for creating documentation for administrators and training DCM staff.

The platform was built using Ruby on Rails as the core technology. Additional capabilities were supported by gems: Active-admin, Paperclip (image and Adobe PDF uploads), Prawn (PDF utilities, watermark etc), Font-awesome-rails, Zurb-foundation (styling), Kaminari (pagination), and others. For development, our team also used Rspec-rails (unit tests), Factory_girl_rails (data setup for tests), Simplecov (code coverage), Debugger, and Better_errors (debugging). An important aspect of our work was creating the production environment on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and BrightCove. Our team was responsible for system architecture, planning, configuration, and deployment of this critical infrastructure for the customer.

Robert Maddestra, Jr., VP, Product Management, DCM Instructional Systems said, "Quoin conceived and built a complete technology solution to support digital video delivery, and was essential to  implementing this new line of business for us."
