Scholastic - E-Commerce Systems

Quoin has a long-term relationship with this leading educational publisher and has supported critical development initiatives for e-commerce, education, and online products groups. We were responsible for re-engineering the client's product catalog, which is used throughout the enterprise to deliver timely and accurate information on the print and digital books available through Scholastic channels.

For several years, Quoin has engaged in multiple projects at the iconic educational publisher Scholastic. Our engagements involved multiple divisions, including eScholastic, Scholastic Education, and Scholastic Technical Services, as well as projects for (Scholastic subsidiary) Tom Snyder Productions.   Our project team and technical leads have been essential members of the technology staff at Scholastic, and they are relied on for their input on development process, technology, architecture, and application design issues.

We have participated in both new and ongoing development efforts. Our support has ranged from staff supplementation to fully integrated project teams to fully external application development. Quoin activities include:

  • Software Engineering – We headed a range of application development initiatives, including re-engineering and integration of existing systems and building new systems from the ground up. These systems support a range of front- and back-end functions, with a strong concentration on title content management and product search. New application development tool stack comprised of Ruby on Rails, Java, and Solr.
  • High-level Data Architecture – Recent projects included re-engineering of the product collateral database and the online Scholastic trade books backlist catalog. These efforts significantly increased the number of eBooks and other titles available via e-commerce and trade channels. Additionally, we had a key role in building out the SaaS architecture including clustered application servers, multiple customer databases, and a media delivery network within a cloud architecture.
  • Business Analysis – We worked one-on-one with business users to codify complex business rules, mapping and matching both structured and unstructured data from disparate sources.  We analyzed, cleaned, and transformed existing records, identifying and addressing duplicate data using Lucene indices.

Key development work products / deliverables include the following:

  • Re-skin of existing applications for modern layouts, better usability
  • Development of a flexible forms-based web application that can be re-tooled for re-use each school year
  • Re-engineering the product database supporting current and future e-commerce websites
  • Design and development of a customized content management tool for data backing online book catalogs
  • Creation of an ETL process for ingesting new / updated feed data from internal and external source systems
  • Development of a new business critical B2B website for trade consumers
